FIRST ELIMINATE...THEN ILLUMINATE!!!

We want peace, we want freedom, we want harmony, we want this, and we want that- yadaa yadaa yadaa..... This is what the people here in Kashmir are frequently heard saying. Actually not only here in Kashmir but in the whole world we are hearing these words to be repeated again and again. Why do we wish for such things when in the real sense we are supposed to ask for those things which can work for the betterment of our society??? I mean how we can ignore all what is happening around us here in this Paradise, Kashmir. After coming across the scenario here, we are finding everywhere the ill effects of modernization. What I mean to say is that it is extremely unfortunate to see that the youngsters here are indulged in various bad activities...I am pointing towards Drug Addiction!!!

I am a student and I have come across so many incidents which have left me dumbfounded and gob smacked. There are so many hopes, so many expectations and much more which the parents have with their children. The parents have a bond of trust and faith upon their children- the very faith which allows them to let their children live their life to the fullest. But just imagine how a Parent would feel after coming to know these deadly truths about their children. All the expectations, all the hopes and everything will undoubtedly come to an end......Alas! This is painful but true....!!!
Here in our valley, which is considered to be the pleasantest, the most beautiful and the most serene place on the earth, there are numerous such cases in which we come across those deadly facts. A parent could never have imagined even in his wildest dreams that his dear child whom he loved so dearly, whom he nourished painstakingly, whom he taught how to walk, how to talk, how to lead a disciplined life, with whom he had so many expectations, would ever become a drug addict...... Not only this, this would shatter each and every dream of the one whose dear lad has put his steps on a wrong path-the path which ends in darkness!!!!

It is extremely unfortunate on our behalf that we, despite of being the followers of Islam let these evils prevail in our society. Not only Islam but all other ‘isms’ are against adopting these evils. Every such thing has been forbidden by Almighty Allah which can cause harm to one’s life, which can actually risk our life. Nowadays we get to see the devastating effects of Drug Addiction. Every now and then we come across those people who have been affected by this addiction. Those people, not only risk their own life but they take this at the cost of their loved ones. It is in place to mention that nowadays the teenagers are seen consuming drugs in the form of so called Cigarettes. Why do they choose such a path which leads them towards DARKNESS....DARKNESS and just DARKNESS!!!! The reason which has been behind this nuisance probably is the company in which the teens spend most of their time. There are some people around us who aim at misleading the budding blooms....and unfortunately these teens get trapped in this web which surely has no way which can take them out of this web. It is very regrettable on our behalf....!

The thing which made me to write this article and that too in an explicit manner, was that I came across a lot of people especially the teens who into such activities. So I decided to give a vent to my feelings in a simple language and not in a gobble de gook one. After having rendered a look over our society, I was made to ponder the condition of our so called ‘modernized’ and ‘civilized’ society. Everywhere we see people making promises and talking garrulously that they are going to do such and such for the betterment of our society, but I have never been able to hear from those people that they will take steps to help in the elimination of these evils- the evils which god forbid, can become the root cause of many other evils. Instead of pressuring the tobacco companies to exercise social responsibility, lets propose to the government that it exercise some ‘Governmental Responsibility’. Stop subsidizing tobacco and let the chips fall where they may. Put our tax money into real ‘societal’ issues that affect us all and act like the government by the people and for the people which we, as an Indian society, have a right to expect it to be. But without expecting much from these mealy- mouthed people, parents and teachers can play a very remarkable and exceptional role in this regard. It is of course their utmost duty to make children not to follow such a wrong path. The students are the linch-pin of our society. They are getting involved in this act unwittingly and unhesitatingly as in the real sense, they are actually unaware of the fact that they are doing this at the cost of their own lives. This deadly habit can once be the cause of their Death...!!!

This nuisance has to be dealt with seriously so that we can make Kashmir, our motherland a better place to live in. We are always wittering on about different issues and demand so many things but hardly care about the things which seem to us very little in the beginning but can create havoc in our society. So it is extremely important for all of us to know about its devastating effects so that we can keep ourselves away from these. If this issue is pondered upon very keenly, I am damn sure that it would provoke a very strong uproar from the people who really care for our society. I am aware of the fact that there are some people here who are totally into it but Almighty Allah has given us the capabilities and the potentialities to overcome these ills. We should expect unswerving support from each and every person of our society, be it the youngsters, the elders, the literate, the illiterate, the rich or the poor.

Almost every person is being made aware of the recently imposed ban on smoking through media. We see everyday how the media is used to whip up the mob mentality about the evils of smoking, the dangers to our society etc. But if we keenly observe it or go for a survey, I am sure that there are still a myriad of people who pay a deaf ear to it....ek kaan se suno ek kaan se phenk do. This is what the people here are mostly heard saying. This is a need of hour to change our attitude towards these evils in order to change our society. We should try to make it clear that it is not 1940 or late times anymore, when people were ignorant about the dangers of smoking. Tobacco Companies now have General Warnings on cigarette packs. Unless they have been living under a rock, the general public should have been exposed to enough information but this time when it comes to cigarettes and addiction. Nicotine information is just a click away. No one is saying get rid of Surgeon General Warnings, but enough is enough! If a person wants to smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day, then that is their choice; tobacco companies should not be held responsible. But one thing is very clear that government is making money out of it and it is of course one of the leading industries of India. The government in its efforts to stop subsidizing the tobacco industry has resorted to great lengths to exercise its political powers in order to force tobacco companies to allegedly exercise corporate social responsibility, knowing well that smoking is a societal ill. It is not an issue that affects our society at large, such as pollution or other environmental issues which the government has a full right to interfere in, as it affects all its citizens. But it is in itself such an issue which seems to be very easy to handle in the beginning but can produce such results which can completely destroy our society.
I am aware of the fact that there is a little chance that we will succeed in changing the law. Nevertheless, it is important that we TRY. It can surely be made a laudable attempt but only if we move forward towards the elimination of this deadly evil. Why do we prefer to live our life in a never-never land when we do possess the capability to change our society for good? I was startled to find such a nuisance prevailing in our so called civilized society. We can subsume all these phenomena under broad categories so that we can create awareness among the masses who can step forward to render a helping hand towards their society which is leading towards a path which will take us all to the world of complete darkness from which none of us can manage to escape. So there is a need to ELIMINATE these morally bad evils from our society in order to ILLUMINATE it!!!
